Mu husband and I plan to go to Morocco for New Year. I am super exited by the opportunity to see this beautiful country and experience the culture, but i can't decide on how to take this trip.

I have thought about taking a group trip, this seems easy, safe and reliable, but this option is somewhat limiting.

I would prefer to have the freedom to go where i please and take my time, but the question is - is it a good thing to do in an unknown country for the first trip? My concerns are:

- how safe is the country for tourists?
- are there safe/unsafe places?
- what is locals attitude toward tourists?
- will i get by with English? ( i also speak Russian, but i don't think it will come handy in Morocco)
- what is the reliable means or transportation within and between the cities?
- I tend to like small local hotels, it is a good choice for Morocco?
- Can someone recommend a good route? Most of the tours cover Casablanca, Fez, Marrakesh.

I will be thankful for any kind of opinion/advice!

cheers

    Hi ,

    here is some answers :

    - the country is very safe for tourists in all places in kingdom JUST if you gone to some small towns or meeting some unknown persons etc..
    - mostly places in cities is SAFE and i guess you can notice what is safe and unsafe , unsafe is only if you move to some sites with no people around and things…
    - marrakech casablanca & ouarzazat is first locals attitude toward tourists
    - you can find who’s speak English & Spianish & French for sure and Rusian is rarely i guess !!!
    - transportation between the cities is The bus's & a big moroccan white taxi & trains (but there some parts still no trains) and also planes for sure
    - as for local hotels : there is very cheaply, like 6$ or 12$ dollars U.S and also there and also there is great ones with shocked heart prices lol , like 1000$ for night or two 2000$ (every city have a nice price for simple hotel with traditional stuffs)
    - casablanca is very big city in morocco with a famouse mosque and very differnt city from others !!! marrakech is call (marakechs red) it’s a magic place in the kingdom, fez is the cultural and spiritual centre of Morocco, oldest of the three imperial cities,

*i wish i explained good and gave some important informations as well
    * and it's not a unknown country but it is very known here and also at the part of world where you live
    * if there some more Questions , just ask!

    have a good luck !!!
    Samir.

Have a great time. I spent two weeks last summer, primarily in Fes, Marrakech. Fes is
historically very interesting. The medina has been there 1100 years. Not unsafe, but it
is easy to get lost, and you have to bribe a kid to show you the way out.
Also some of the cultural sites are off limits to non-Muslims.
It isn't far to Volubilis, the ancient Roman capital of Mauretania.

My favorite, Marrakech is the liveliest place, every night in the Djem al Fnaa is a celebration.

Also, there are too many unauthorized "guides" who want to take you to merchants from
    whom they get a kickback.

I didn't go to the mountains or the sea.

Casablanca is big (4M people) and businesslike, a big Mosque, but brand new with no history,
    maybe worth a day.
Tanger is fairly dodgy, "the Tijuana of Africa," and there's nothing there that isn't better elsewhere.

There are fairly frequent trains, but the rides can be all day, e.g. Fes to Marrakech.
They are comfortable, can be crowded. You probably won't need air conditioning as much.

French is the most common European language, some Spanish in the North.
English is spoken, but signage, menus,
and periodicals are all in French. I didn't see any Russian at all.

The meals are awesome, especially tagines,
(stews with meat and dried fruit) and there are sweet shoppes (French influence
again) around the main square in Marrakech.
