  I drove most of the route you talk about. In between Fes and Marrakech is Cascade d Ouzoud; there are really nice, free spots, to camp near the waterfalls, or a hotel. I have a picture in the photo section.
  Between Fes and the Sahara, I may be mistaken, you have to cross the High Atlas or the Middle Atlas; I hope you don’t get held up for weather in the mountains. The Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou is on this road, don’t miss it!
