Whats up , myself and two friends are going to be in Morocco for 5-6 days.. "love to stay longer... but oh well" Anyone rent a car while there? I've priced out the majors.. hertz avis etc and it all pretty expensive.. more then I expected.

We'll be flying into Marrakech I wanted to spend a day or two there, then see fes and drive to the sahara and back to Marrakech. Seems like all this can be done without having to rush it.. but I've never been so I have no idea what driving there is like. anyhow any insight would be great thanks .

Ok I am from there. lived there. Few pointers ... try not to drive there, espcially since you havenever been there. You will go crazy. Us moroccans do not drive by speed limits and it can be a nightmare trying to figure out whos going where. besides, the grid formation of streets here in the US we are so used to here, will serve you no good there.
The best thing I would suggest is RENT a taxi guy for the day or weekend. They are 2 kinds, the legal Taxis and the illegal taxis. The difference is in price. The illegal taxis will charge less and they tend to be good people with no jobs, so they use there cars to transport people. The illegal part is that they do not have a license as taxi drivers. So if they get stoped by cops they get fined. You get to walk away unscathed. But thats FAR and few in between when that happens. In 10 years of riding in the illegal taxis, we were stoped i would say 7 times. 1 resulted in a chase which was fun.
I digress. But really they are just a good as real taxis. If you want to feel super comfortable, get a standard real cab and tell him what you want to do. But that means he has to go with you everywhere. Not sure thats your plan. You might have to pay for his food etc but it will be cheap.

If this sounds like too much of a hassle ... then just go for the original idea of renting a car. Just be prepared to get lost and sometimes frustrated during traffic jams. But thats part of the chic ness of the place no?

Or you can use the train which is pretty darn good. Just keep an eye on your belongings of course. I dont say that cause it Morocco, I say it because if you were on BART here and left your things for a few minutes it will be gone ... trust me. Keep in mind you are a tourist, and you will bring attention to yourself. But if you show respect for the culture and habits ... it will open doors you have never dreamed. Foreigh cultures (regardless where you go I belive) LOVE and will help any one that shows interest and respect for the country he is visiting. They will go out of their way to help you. Be weary a bit of fast talking young guys with a shine in there eye ... those are salesmen ... which mens they might have an agenda.

Price negotiations: If you go with either taxis, NEGOTIATE PRICE before leaving. And repeat it over and shake hands over it (like farmers). You might give half then and half later, your call, but again shake hands over the deal. Smile and look natural like youhave negotiated before.

I think thats it? good luck and have fun over all. try the snails I dare you! They are delicious.

hey thanks a lot for the info. I'm just trying to find away to see as much and enjoy as much as possible within the limited time that I have. I may just try to work in a couple more days and go around by train.

Do you know much about ferries across from spain to Morocco??

and is there any truth to the sahara being dangerous.. ie landmines ??

i forgot, its winter now, you may have a hard time crossing the passes if you wanted to go to the sahara, i think... but we took camels in the sahara for 3 days, not a landmine in site.... the trails they use are well used, so its unlikely, and i never heard of that.

i must disagree with you Michelangelo. i entered my $40 US Dollar a day rent a car in the city of Quarzazate, with insurance and 14 years driving under my belt.

this said, if you can get a taxi for around the same price, why not do it if its only 3 of you

i had the time of my life, we drove from Quarzazate to Azrou, passing along the southern part of the country via Merzouga. we drove thru all of the paved sections of Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, and Draa Valley. this incredible trip was over a period of 2 weeks. we droped the car off in Azrou and the company charged us an extra 60 bucks to drive it back to the rental place.

gas costs were low, the car got like 40 MPG

we never got lost, unless we tried, by going off the paved roads, but the fun we had doing this, getting lost in little villages, building little brigdes to pass a big ditch, kids helping us the whole way. the only way you will get lost is when you are trying to leave a big city, signs are scarce and Arabic or French for directions is a must.

i started this trip with one friend, a german man who spoke good french too! that 1st day, we met 2 french guys who joined us for 4 days, when they left we met 2 french girls who joined us for the remainder of the trip.

we had the smallest rental, it fit 4 backpacks, it had a sand guard under the motor... very important if you go to the desert. more times than i can count we got stuck on sand, everyone got out and i drove and they pushed till we got moving

what more can i say, please ask!!! your friend, mark

I spent two weeks in Morocco with two other girls (who were French) and we were able to see a lot of Morocco. I absolutely loved it.

However, I felt lucky that I was with two french speakers. Hardly anyone knows english. Driving signs are often times non existant or in arabic, so sometimes french doesn't even help. However, I felt that my friends french guide books gave great directions about driving around, particularly in cities. We still had some problems- got lost a few times, had to ask policemen for guidance....but it all worked out.

On my trip I met only one other english speaker- he was from Australia. He didn't know french nor arabic, and said that he was having a pretty difficult time trying to get around. My suggestion would be to learn some french and arabic before you go (if you dont know some already), and buy a guide that is specifically aimed towards driving around in Morocco (i dont know if one even exists).
