Wow...I just found this tribe and thought i'd join and say hi to everyone. My mother is from Morocco and the last time I was there was in 1997....I hope to go back very soon with my husband and children so they can experience the history and beauty as well!!!

    Hi Kaotar,

Not too much activity on this tribe, but I'd love to ask you lots of questions, I am travelling to Morocco in September for vacation.

    Best,
    Zafira

What part of Morocco will you be in?

We're travelling to Marrakesh, then probably over to the Atlantic coast, Fes, Meknes, Volubulis (sp?), probably Rabat. Not sure yet about going to Tangier, Casa Blanca.
Actually I'd rather see the Med than the Atlantic but I haven't checked on train routes up there yet.

My impression from some other travel boards for Morocco was that Tangier could be kind of dodgy and that around the ferries it was worse for tourists.

I am travelling with one of my dance students so it will be two American ladies alone, LOL. And not young. :)
She is almost a white blonde and really stands out which is going to label us TOURIST!!!
Our trip is Sept 20 and we depart on Oct 3.

We arrive on Sept 20th, right at Eid, so there was some concern about finding taxis/buses and getting around.
Thought that by flying straight into Marrakesh that would put us in a city that we could navigate on foot the first 3 full days of our trip.
Then we were going to take the train to our next stop.

Does anyone know if it is that hard to get around at Eid? And how long is it before travel is back to normal?

          Hey Zafira,

If you're going to be in Marrakesh and want to visit the Atlantic Coast I'd recommend taking the bus to Essaouria! It's a fabulous place and well worth the bus ride.

We were glad we didn't spend time in Casa and just used it as a hub for coming and going by train or plane. If you are going to be travelling by train or bus expect a full day of travel between each destination. Places are farther apart than you'd expect.

I'd also recommend staying within the medina in any town you visit. It's easier to get around on foot and you'll be immersed in culture and history.

When I went we were two American women travelling alone and we got around just fine. Sure we stood out, but you will stand out whether you are a blond, brunette, or redhead.

Traveling during Eid is probably both good and bad.....travel time may be longer but at least you are there during the celebrations! How fun.....
So do you speak any arabic or fremch by chance?....Spanish....When I was in the souk years ago...a vendor spoke to me in arabic first. then french, then spanish...haha...then finally english, which he didn't know very well compared to the other languages......Use normal travel precautions and you should be fine traveling 2 ladies together. the people are very nice, friendly, and willing to help.
I flew into Casablanca but Marrakesh is probably better.....

            Hi Kaotar,
The celebration was sort of my thought, everyone should be in a good mood now that they can eat, LOL.
I speak some "shwaya shwaya" Egyptian Arabic and have a small Moroccan Arabic guide and small French language guide. And I've had 7 years of Spanish, it comes back to me in odd snippets, just when I think I can't remember any, the verb, noun, feminine/masculine will all pop back into my head and I can make a whole sentence!
We're passing thru the Casa airport, but I figured if transport was iffy during the beginning of Eid, we could get around on foot in Marrakesh.
I'm getting really excited about my trip.

Sure, ask away.....let's see....my mom is from Kenitra, Morocco. So I went there, and to Rabat, Agadir, and of course, casablanca cuz that's where the airport lands. I have some family in Spain as well....apparently you just hop on a ferry boat and you can easily go between Morocco and Spain........have you had Moroccan food before???? Yum!!

I have not traveled that way but yes, from Tangier to Granada is not far at all.
Are you traveling to Morocco alone, Zafira?
