Re: New member from Tangiers ...
Wed, December 8, 2004 - 12:38 PMwelcome!
finally, someone posted something...
a stupid question, but did you live in Tangiers? I think I only passed through when taking the ferry back to Spain, so I don't know much about the city.
I was recently lamenting the fact that most of the people I had met lived in somewhat rural areas and it's become quite hard to stay in contact. I get the sporadic email, but it is hard for us to understand each other through written communication when french is neither of our first languages.
:(
so I guess that means I should just say hello in person!

Re: New member from Tangiers ...
Fri, December 10, 2004 - 10:59 AMHey Slave Jitty: Yes I did for a long time.I went the American Shool of Tangiers (www.as-t.org/) all my life, and let me tell you all of the american exchane students that came over or lived there because of government jobs fell MADLY in love with Tangiers. My parents are from there, and I was born here then raised there from age 4 onwards. I LOVE Tangiers, granted it has gone thru changes ... but I equate it to SF in many ways. The topography, crowded housing, hilly streets, windy bay ... . We recently had a world wide alumni meeting here in SF and it was a blast. These people all had one thing in common, the love for the city and community.
Morale of the story is: When passing thru these cities ... sure you will get hassled by those obnoxious guides and maybe cheated, even robbed ... but you know what? It doesn't happen that often. The people there TRULY have a love of hopitality. They treat you like family right away regardless of who yo are, color creed, religion. I miss that and look forward goign back visiting my mom this summer. And if anyone will be there this summer, mi casa es tu casa. We have a nice spacious villa outside of town.
Cheers.
OH HI TATIANA. Welcome.

i'm so glad to hear that! I hate that guidebooks make a habit of warning people away from exploring port/border cities.
thanks for extending your hospitality here, i might take you up on it ;) -

Re: New member from Tangiers ...
Sun, December 12, 2004 - 11:02 PMave ave! I totally agree with you. I get rather fed up going on those obscure travel guides online - they're full of "don't go here, don't go there, don't wear this, don't do this, don't say that.."
i've learned that some of the "advices" are just common courtesies. Anyway from my trip to Morocco this past autumn, I absolutely love it. The people exude such friendliness and are so hospitable. in fact, more often than not they were as curious I was about them.. fascinating! simply loved it..!
