Re: For Who Was In Marrakech!!!
Sun, February 18, 2007 - 9:54 PMI returned home from Morocco just last week. We went to Al Baraka restaurant inside the medina in Marrakesh. They had a belly dancer and fantastic live music. I'm not sure if the dancer is there every night of the week or not. You might want to check.

I did hear that there were a couple of other places with belly dancers, but I don't remember which places. I'm sure if you asked around in Marrakesh someone could tell you. -

Re: For Who Was In Marrakech!!!
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 7:49 AMHey Samir!
Morocco was great! We had a fantastic time. Spent three weeks travelling around. Essaouira, Marrakesh, Fes, Chefchaouen, Meknes and Volubilis, and Casa. And, we were in Mali for two weeks prior to that. I absolutely LOVED Mali.
We only saw the one dancer at Al Baraka. We went there for the food which was great. Our local friend said it's his favorite restaurant in Marrakesh. I can't remember what the meal cost. Baraka wasn't crowded at all. In fact, there weren't many foreigners in all of Morocco this time of year.

Re: For Who Was In Marrakech!!!
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 7:08 AMHi! I haven't been on Tribe for a while. I hope everyone is doing OK here on Friends of Morocco.
I've been to Marrakech a few times but the only 'belly dancers' I've seen were Berber women doing a dance that bears no resemblance to the 'raqs sharki' that you might see in Egypt or the Levant. I think it is more of a local folk dance than true belly dance. I'm not sure you can find real belly dance in Marrakech. -

you are absolutely correct!
belly dancing is and egyptian & mostly middle eastern tradition,
not a moroccan tradition.

Re: For Who Was In Marrakech!!!
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 10:13 AMTrue, it's not of Moroccan tradition, but the belly dancer I saw in Marrakesh was definitely of the Raks Sharqi style so it can be found in Morocco. -

Re: For Who Was In Marrakech!!!
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 1:11 AMWell, it can be found in Switzerland too! :-)
It's like in the Emirates whe you can see Sharqi dancers in Lebanese night clubs - but actually, the dance is "officially" forbidden. And it's not native there.
Sometimes people will just offer the tourists what they want to see. (Or what they think they want...)
Like you can get a flamenco show everywhere in Spain, although it's originally from Andalusia.
