I found this place quite by accident, but Im glad I did.
My bf and I very recently visited Morocco for two weeks, and now that I'm back, I really miss the place. The only way I can describe my feelings is "homesick". We went to Fes, Tangier (or is it really Tanger? Ive seen both spellings), Marrakech and Casablanca. Each city was such a discovery. At first, in each place, we got really frustrated trying to find our way around, getting lost, having to ask for help. But after the first day walking up and down the same streets a million times, we got to know the place, and just as we were feeling comfortable, it was time to move on to the next city. Ive written about the trip in a journal, and Im in the process of putting it online for people to read.
I would love to be able to go back to Morocco someday.

It's Tangier in English, and Tanger in French. It does seem that the French have a done a good job in suppressing all
other European languages in Morocco. It took me three days to find a Herald Tribune (!) at a news stand.

I had a good time in my two weeks in country, though the Fes festival was held in 42 C heat and had logistical problems,
and I had problems with hotel (not the wonderful local Moroccan) food. I was a little disappointed as a cultural tourist that
some of the oldest spots of interest, like the university in the Fes medina, were off limits to non-Muslims. Marrakech was
lively and fun, most places an easy walk, and more open to cultural tourism as many religious buildings
like Ben Youssef are now museums.

Tangier and Casablanca were mostly way points, with a few walking tours, but T's reputation as
the "Tijuana of Africa" alas seemed to be the case for this foreign tourist. Constant hustling by unwanted "guides" and
cheating taxi drivers made for some annoyance in otherwise friendly surroundings.

I'm in the medina in Marrakech right now. Marrakech is, in some ways, a bit like Fes: it's a demanding place. I'd recommend a trip to Essaouira sometime. It's very relaxed in comparison and a bit cooler too as it's on the coast. I reallt love Rabat too; also more relaxed and on the coast.
